The modern practice in most organisations is now to allow candidates to choose whether they want to share this information or not. We understand that disclosing this type of information can be very sensitive for some people. However, due to the fact that our summer camps are residential summer camps, it is important for us to be aware of the gender of our staff in order to best assign staff for things like staff accommodation (it is shared), supervising kids at night (certain staff sleep in the room with the kids), shower supervision, supervising younger campers getting changed for the pool or beach, etc.
